 Wheelchair access?
Author: Simon J (---.pth-as3.dial.plus.net)

Hope you can all help; my wife and I are considering Madeira for our autumn holiday; she uses a wheelchair most of the time so we're trying to find out how wheelchair friendly (or not) Madeira is. Particularly hotels, restaurants, bars and attractions. All advice gratefully received.

Not very friendly I´m afraid. Hills all over and stairs, thousends of stairs...some of the newest hotels maybe have lifts vide enough for a wheelchair, but other going will be difficult. Locals who have difficulties with walking use 4 wheelled mopedtype things...I dont know what its name is in english, but you can drive with it in difficult places like forest for example...you can go up and down the hillside with thosekind of vehicles easily...with wheelchair no can do. You can not push and she can not go by herself...wheelchair with motor is too weak in those places.
Sorry, I wish that everybody could enjoy the beautiful island...but it will not be very nice just stay at the hotel...you can not find easily anykind of slides on the streets or anything to help, local people are nice and helpfull...so maybe with their assistence even your vife would enjoy the trip.

I agree with Maria not friendly at all it's crazy really as the EU have a law saying that in October 2004 all public places had to have disable access but it passed Madeira by wich is a reall shame. I have a firend who is in a wheelchair and is going to be best man at are wedding in Madeira next summer luckly there will be lots of strong men to help carry the chair in some places and we've got a mini bus hired so we can take him round the island.
